Red Velvet Cupcakes


  • ¼ cup butter
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp. red food colouring
  • ½ tsp vanilla
  • ¾ tsp baking soda
  • 1 ½ tsp white vinegar
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 tbsp and 2 tsp cocoa
  • ½ tsp salt


1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease 12 cup muffin pans and line 10 paper baking cups

2. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar with mixer until light and fluffy. Mix in eggs, buttermilk, red food colouring, and vanilla. Stir in baking soda and vinegar. Combine the flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Stir into the batter just until blended. Spoon the batter into prepared cups, divided evenly.

3. Bake in a preheated oven until tops spring back when lightly pressed, about 20-25 minutes. Cool in the pan and set over a wire rack. When cool, arrange the cupcakes on a serving platter, and frost with desired frosting or check out the recipe for Cream Cheese Frosting.
